Ashland Post Investigating Fatal Plane Crash in Jackson Township

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, OH – The Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal single-engine plane crash that occurred Monday evening, May 5, in a wooded area near the intersection of State Route 89 and Township Road 902 in Jackson Township, Ashland County.

According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 7:42 p.m. and involved an Express 2000 FT aircraft. The pilot, identified as 72-year-old Gary Wolfelt of West Lafayette, Indiana, was the only person onboard. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Emergency crews from the Polk Jackson Perry Fire District responded and confirmed there were no other occupants in the plane. The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland County Coroner’s Office, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) also assisted at the crash site.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in coordination with federal aviation authorities.
